In-demand producer 9lives (Max Jardine) has had more than a breakout year.

9lives featured in Rolling Stone AU/NZ‘s Future of Music series, and he also performed at our Rolling Stone House at SXSW Sydney, impressing gig-goers of every age.

He’s been switching up the production game with a collaboration belt spanning Trippie Redd and Lil Nas X to Rico Nasty and Kanii.

Today, he’s shared new single “Man of the Year, and he grabbed US act prettifun for a supreme vocal feature. The pair initially connected over Discord.

According to 9lives, “Man of the Year” is “for the people who are proud of themselves and want to celebrate the wins they’ve achieved along the way.”

Laser-like synths and a ground-shaking bass drop surround prettifun’s singing, making for a track that 9lives says should be played “just before New Year’s ticks over, such that the drop comes in as the clock strikes midnight to set your year off right.”

9lives’ new single follows his prominent slot at Rolling Stone House at SXSW Sydney.

Befitting his growing global status, the Aotearoa-born artist headlined the third and final night of our SXSW Sydney event on Friday, October 18th, ensuring Rolling Stone House went out with a bang.

Phoebe Rings, Ayesha Madon, Emmanuel Kelly, Hockey Dad, The Grogans, Voice of Baceprot, and more also performed at Rolling Stone House.

9lives featured in our ‘Future of Music’ series this year.

In conjunction with our global Rolling Stone partners, our editorial team compiled a list of 25 of the most exciting and innovative artists from Australia and Aotearoa, the artists we believe are destined for the very top.

“Did you know that one of the 2020’s most innovative artists hails from humble Hawke’s Bay? Pioneer of the Sigilkore sound, a subgenre that draws on trap, hyperpop, cloud rap, and electronic music, 9lives has caught the attention of US stars like Trippie Redd and Odetari,” we wrote about him.

“While the current ‘Big 3’ of rap bitterly bicker about their talent in a very public way, 9lives and the new generation of producers quietly go about their business, dropping endless streaming behemoths. 9lives — otherwise known as Max Jardine — already boasts over six million monthly listeners on Spotify, with that impressive figure growing by the week.”

9lives will be a special guest on Kanii’s upcoming tour, which commences at the end of the month in Hamburg, Germany. You can find out tour information here.

9lives’ “Man of the Year” (ft. prettifun)” is out now via PULSE Records.
