It’s been nearly three years since 5 Seconds of Summer released a studio album, and it seems fans won’t have to wait too much longer.
In a new Rolling Stone AU/NZ interview, which features in our June-August issue, bassist Calum Hood gave an update on potential new music from the Sydney quartet.
While discussing his newly-released debut solo LP, ORDER chaos ORDER, the 29-year-old songwriter hinted at what’s to come next.
“We’re always planning. The 5SOS cog in the music world never stops. In fact, it’s probably the hardest-working cog,” he told Rolling Stone AU/NZ.
“There’s always conversations going. There’s always people dreaming up things – ‘What if we do this, what if we do that?’ So fear not, because there’s always something going on.”
5SOS’ last album, 5SOS5, dropped in September 2022 and was yet another hit release. The record hit #1 in Australia – their fifth consecutive chart-topper – and reached #1 in the UK and #2 in the US.
5SOS bandmate and guitarist Michael Clifford is set to release his own debut effort, Sidequest, on July 25th and will be the last member to go solo.

But despite the ventures outside of the band, Hood has insisted that 5SOS will always be the main priority for all members.
“I know what my strengths are, I know what my weaknesses are… I feel really good that we’re even able to be in this position,” he explained.
“I think I have good guidelines in terms of [drummer Ashton Irwin] and [singer Luke Hemmings] and Michael and how they’ve held themselves accountable throughout their album processes. Ash has played shows, Luke’s toured and we still feel incredibly strong as a unit. So I have a good blueprint of the absolute basics of showing respect to the band, showing respect to the music and the fans especially, you know?
“I would say that we’re 100 per cent a better band, a stronger unit, because we’ve released solo music. No doubt.”
