G Flip Heats Up the BWS Cool Room [Live Review]

G Flip brought their new alcoholic juice (and their mum) to the BWS Cool Room for a gig like no other

Modelled off a BWS Cool Room, the quirky purpose-built inflatable venue set the stage for G Flip in a totally unique, fun and cool way.

Set up behind the already iconic Moongdog World in Preston, Melbourne; the BWS Cool Room matches the aesthetics of your local bottelo fridge but throws in a stage, lighting rig and sound system.

Previously, the pop-up venue has played host to Lime Cordiale, Fisher, and Armani White. But on Friday night, the Cool Room was home to G Flip and over 200 lucky competition winners to celebrate the launch of their alcoholic juice, BOX.

The BWS Cool Room is an intimate space and with such a small capacity, the crowd was treated to a personal experience with one of Australia’s biggest artists. Within almost arms reach of everyone there, G Flip was able to let their personality shine, engaging with audience members in the way a standup comic might.

As soon they began singing, the space became irrelevant. G Flip seemingly lost all awareness that they were in an inflatable room and not the stage at a major festival, giving every song enormous passion and energy, squashing any concerns of feeling cold in the Cool Room.

G Flip previously told Rolling Stone AU/NZ that their inspiration to make BOX simply came from a love of alcoholic juice and a desire not to be burping their way through gigs. The result: two flagship flavours, BOX Tropical Bang and BOX Apple Guava.

Though BOX was developed with retail partner Endeavour Group and creative partner Moon Dog Craft Brewery, it was G Flip’s mum who has been at the heart of the taste-testing process.

Spotlighting their favourite flavour, Tropical Bang, it was clear that BOX wasn’t just an enticing commercial move, but also a fun bonding adventure for a mum and daughter duo.

The BWS Cool Room lets you see your favourite musicians in an entirely new and unique way. Instead of just experiencing seeing an artist, the pop-up venue encourages you to immerse yourself entirely and share an experience with the artist.

In the case of G Flip, the venue seemed specifically built for their  music. While the drummer extraordinaire revelled in the opportunity to let their laid-back humour fill the room, they exploited the acoustics of the smaller space with precision, ensuring nobody could escape the sound of their drums.

Unfortunately, actual cool rooms are, you guessed it, cool. Navigating the towers of slabs can be a gruelling task when your body temperature is dropping with each passing second (even more so if beers, ciders and seltzers aren’t your thing).

Thankfully, with BOX, G Flip has cut down the thinking time to zero, with Tropical Bang & Apple Guava bound to be a hit this summer.
