Hard II Love, from 2016, lives up to its name, but it’s got a few slam dunks across its runtime — particularly first single “No Limit.” The Master P-quoting club-stomper proves, via its Rae Sremmurd sonic spacing and peak Young Thug guest spot, that Usher stayed deeply in touch with the sounds of 2010s Atlanta. Inspired by both his newfound independence and the OG version by Frank Sinatra, Usher provides listeners with his effervescent yet gentle vocals and a mature flair on “My Way.” Though the song was released relatively early in his career, it placed him in the foreground as a R&B force to be reckoned with.–J.J.

It is impossible to describe the corporeal impact “Yeah!” had upon its release, topping the charts for three months and blasting out of every car, club, and crib for much longer. Slotted onto Confessions as a radio play just before release, it was originally written to the beat for Petey Pablo’s “Freak-a-Leek,” before being quickly retrofitted with a new synth line after the alchemical, body-moving properties of its three vocalists were discovered. “Burn” is a great case in point for the inherent appeal of Usher’s voice: the track lacks the instantaneous hooks of some of his other canonical singles, but it’s full of tiny runs and mid-verse flourishes that can only be pulled off by a star of his magnitude. Despite its quiet-storm appeal, the track had legs, carrying the distinction of unseating the monolithic “Yeah!” from the top of the Billboard charts.–C.P.

Released at the tail end of 2004, “Lovers And Friends” is a jagged, opportunistic attempt to recapture the magic of “Yeah!” — and it slaps. Usher, Lil Jon, and Ludacris maybe should’ve formed a supergroup, so neatly does their tripartite charisma translate to this satiny lift of an underheard ‘90s ballad. Despite “U Remind Me” being a song about grief, its bouncy Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis/Eddie Hustle production instantly makes you forget why you were trippin’ over your old thing at all. Looking 4 Myself is one of Usher’s most rewarding front-to-back albums, a mid-career hard left into EDM, trance, and experimental pop that yielded this collaboration with Diplo — easily one of the singer’s boldest, most singular songs. The title suggests a release that never quite comes, no matter what the hi-hats insinuate, always arriving breathlessly back at the same pulsing synth line. Usher’s classically emotive falsetto scales heights with little warning, etching out a liminal relationship. The song sounds sculpted from glass: a masterpiece of postmillennial, noirish R&B.–C.P.
