Wake up. Grab hold of something, anything. Your new favourite metal band has arrived.
Hailing from Indonesia, Voice of Baceprot will make their presence felt throughout the month of October on a debut tour of Australia.
The all-female trio has enjoyed the type of rare praise from rockers and critics that, if words really could pack a punch, might knock down a fortress.
Consisting of Marsya (vocals and guitar), Widi (bass), and Siti (drums), Voice of Baceprot are like-minded heavy-music connoisseurs who came together in 2014 as Islamic junior high school students in their hometown of Singajaya, a small village two hours’ drive away from the city of Garut, West Java.
Baceprot (pronounced Bah-Che-Prot) is a nod to the girls’ Sundanese language, and their musical tongue – it means “Noisy.”
Consider yourself warned.
“We are honoured to be invited to Australia by SXSW and to be doing our first national tour,” Marsya exclusively tells Rolling Stone AU/NZ.
“The stage to us is an independent arena for musicians to be safe and grow, as their voices echo independence, defending humanity and eternal peace.”
Voice of Baceprot has guitar heroes everywhere rolling out the red carpet, from Flea to Tom Morello, Vernon Reid and Slash.
Morello, the Rage Against the Machine axeman, is a true believer. “One of the greatest moments in rock and roll history,” he says of the band. “Seeing them play, and seeing the authenticity in which they tackled Rage Against the Machine’s songs were really impressive to me. It really is a testament to the unifying power of rock and roll, that gender, religion, national boundaries can’t stand in the way of it.”
Voice of Baceprot caught the buzz in 2017 when a performance video of “The Enemy of Earth Is You” went global.
The shredders took their talents on the road for European tours in 2021 and 2022, the United States in 2023, and they’ve rocked several of the world’s biggest stages, including German’s Wacken Open Air in 2022.
Earlier in the year, they shattered the glass ceiling by become the first Indonesian act to perform at Glastonbury, the grandaddy of Britain’s festivals.
Voice of Baceprot’s first Australian run includes a special show on Thursday, October 17th at SXSW Sydney, for Rolling Stone House.
The journey continues in Brisbane, Burleigh Heads, Melbourne, Adelaide and comes to a halt October 28th at Perth’s Rosemount Hotel, for a trek presented by David Roy Williams.
“You better be careful,” reckons Morello, “whoever is playing after them better be on their A game that day. I wouldn’t wanna play after them.”
