total tommy has released a new single titled “ADELINE”, on the same day she was confirmed as one of the 70 initial artists for this year’s BIGSOUND.
The Sydney-based artist has impressed with several releases this year so far, and “ADELINE” is another slice of intimate lo-fi indie grunge.
Co-written with her wife Caitlin Park (aka experimental pop artist HANDSOME), the reflective song offers advice to total tommy’s teenage self, promising that things will improve: “I need to remind you / You don’t have to do this anymore.”
“‘ADELINE’ was written on a trip to Melbourne earlier this year,” total tommy reveals. “I was feeling really nostalgic about being back in my hometown, and wrote ‘ADELINE’ as a bit of a letter to my teenage self, and the advice I’d give her now. It’s about finding that ignition and getting better at being able to shut off all of the noise your brain makes”
You can watch the accompanying fuzzed-up black and red visualiser below.
“ADELINE” follows total tommy’s well-received 2024 singles “microdose” and “Losing Out”, which received positive reviews upon their release, establishing total tommy as an up-and-coming talent of note in Australian indie music.
According to the artist herself, it’s a project that “started when I moved cities, came out, and spent time properly getting to know myself. Parts of my brain got unlocked that I’d never been able to tap into before, and with that I quickly got to learn a lot about who I was. I partied so much with new queer friends, fell in love, made mistakes, and wrote music to make sense of it all.”
total tommy is set to perform at BIGSOUND 2024 alongside other emerging talents like Alex the Astronaut, Sly Withers, and Keli Holiday (the solo project of Peking Duk’s Adam Hyde) from September 3rd to 6th. See the full lineup here.
