MJ: The Musical is coming to Melbourne.

Following a red-hot run in Sydney, the Olivier and Tony Award-winning blockbuster will open at Her Majesty’s Theatre in September 2025, with tickets on sale now here.

Check out Variety AU/NZ‘s review of the Sydney production here.

To celebrate the musical’s arrival in Australia, one of its main stars, Ilario Grant, who plays the King of Pop himself, took part in Rolling Stone AU/NZ‘s On the Record series, where artists take us through some of their favourite albums.

Grant headed down to the Music Room at HER in Melbourne to spotlight some personal favourites, but he made sure to include a record by an artist with a special connection to Jackson.

Check out Grant’s On the Record picks below.

Producer Michael Cassel announced earlier this month that Grant would continue in the leading role of MJ following acclaimed performances in Broadway and Sydney.

Announcing the casting, Cassel said “Ilario has been part of this show’s journey from the world’s biggest stages, and I’m so proud to have him leading our Melbourne season. He brings incredible heart, intensity and artistry to every performance, and Melbourne audiences are going to feel that from the moment he steps on stage.”

MJ’s Director and Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon OBE, who has been leading the casting for the production, had equally high praise for Grant, saying: “Performing as MJ is an enormous undertaking, but when I first met Ilario, I knew he was one of those special performers who would be able to capture the authenticity and power of this great performer.”

Directed and choreographed by Wheeldon and penned by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Lynn Nottage, MJ offers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Dangerous world tour, diving deep into the artistry and ambition of the King of Pop. The soundtrack features over 25 iconic hits including “Beat It”, “Smooth Criminal”, “Man in the Mirror”, and “Thriller”.

A certified crowd-puller, MJ has been seen by more than one million people since opening on Broadway and continues to wow audiences around the globe.
