On the Record with Merpire

The Naarm/Melbourne artist takes part in Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s On the Record series ahead of the release of her second album

Merpire

Rick Clifford

In this new Rolling Stone AU/NZ series, we get to know the music tastes of artists through their favourite records. Next up, Naarm/Melbourne artist Merpire.

This Friday, shelves in record stores around Australia will get a little darker and dreamier with the arrival of Merpire’s new album, Milk Pool.

The album blends dark pop with moody synths, unusual rhythms, and vivid lyrics, exploring romance, desire, and change.

Written at a crossroads in her life, Milk Pool takes its name from what Merpire calls “the murky fluidity” of the actions that brought it to life.

The album features recent singles “Premonition”, “Bigger”, and “Leaving With You”, the last of which captures what Merpire describes as “the kind of jumpy, ever-climbing emotion” that comes with longing for a crush.

To celebrate, Merpire has announced a run of intimate solo shows, complete with vinyl signings, meet-and-greets, and a special Soundmerch launch event featuring a live set and signings. She’ll also appear at this year’s Town Folk Festival (see full dates here).

Before Milk Pool fills up record store shelves across Australia and beyond, Merpire dropped by Feminista Vinyl in her hometown for Rolling Stone AU/NZ‘s On the Record series, where artists take us through some of their favourite albums.
