Marlin’s Dreaming are on a hot streak.
The Dunedin indie-pop band released the next single from their upcoming album today, continuing an impressive run of releases over the past few months.
“Lucky Star” is an upbeat and lively love song packed with driving drum kicks, poppy guitar strums, and frontman Semisi Ma’ia’i’s reflective vocals. It perfectly captures the small but powerful – and sometimes challenging – nature of your closest relationship with catchy chorus lines that weave in the band’s signature touch of melancholy.
The new single follows the almost post-Britpop “Hello My Dear” and the Erny Belle-featuring alt-country ballad “Earnestly”, both of which marked a slight departure from their usual swirling and dreamy sound.
You can watch the accompanying music video for the band’s new single below. Directed by Ma’ia’i himself, the DIY-feel clip features everyday yet intimate moments of couples around Auckland, from bus rides to late-night park walks and home scenes.
Ma’ia’i, who is now based in Auckland, reflects on how the city might be influencing their evolving sound:
“Dunedin will always be home, but there’s a lethargy that comes with staying in a place a long time. After moving to Auckland I wanted to capture the influence that the place I live in has on me, both lyrically and also musically,” he says.
Marlin’s Dreaming will release their new album HIRL later this year, the highly anticipated follow-up to 2021’s positively received Hasten.
They’ve also confirmed a tour across New Zealand and Australia (read our chat with the band about their previous Australian visit), playing shows in Mount Maunganui, New Plymouth, Wellington, Auckland, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne (see full dates below).
