Kate Ceberano on Reinvention and Returning to the Dance Floor

“I wanna be back on the dance floor, singing my tits off.”

After over four decades in the music industry, Kate Ceberano is anything but static. The Australian music icon, who graced the cover of Rolling Stone Australia in 1990, has navigated every genre from pop to jazz to soul with hits like “Bedroom Eyes”, “Pash” and “Everythings Alright”.

Now, as she looks ahead, Ceberano is ready to evolve once again. In a recent episode of Behind The Rolling Stone Cover podcast, Ceberano revealed her vision for the future to Rolling Stone AU/NZ Editor-in-Chief Poppy Reid.

When asked where she sees herself fitting into the current music industry, she shares: “I remember listening to David Bowie and he said, you know, it was time to kill off some characters he’d created because they’re a burden. Ziggy Stardust was done.”

“In order for me to evolve, I have to actually recalibrate my sense of self to zero and start anew,” she says.

For Ceberano, a fresh start means a return to the dance floor. “I wanna be back in the centre of the dance floor,” she says. “I want that 360 camera above my head, I wanna be static but singing my tits off…I just wanna go back home.”

But Ceberano’s future isn’t just about exploring new music. She’s deeply aware of the challenges that come with aging in an industry that often sidelines women over 40. “We have this thing in our music industry where, for some reason, over the age of 40, the industry decides you’re not really worthy of mainstream,” she says.

With her wealth of experience and undeniable talent, she’s more determined than ever to carve out a space for herself – and for other women like her – where they can continue to thrive and create. “[I’m] of an age and a level now where [I] probably don’t give a fuck.”
