Vintage Stores and Sunrise Swims: Jimmy Harwood’s Gold Coast Must-Dos

Find your new favourite Gold Coast spot with recommendations from singer-songwriter, Jimmy Harwood

In Partnership with Gold Coast Experience Exchange

When Jimmy Harwood touches down on the Gold Coast, he’s not here for the obvious tourist spots. The Melbourne-based singer-songwriter heads straight for the places that make the beachside city feel most alive: sunrise swims, vintage shopping and his favourite record store.

The Spit is his go-to place to catch the sunrise. “Get up at 5:30am and treat yourself to the view. I promise you will not be disappointed,” Jimmy tells Rolling Stone AU/NZ as part of the Gold Coast Experience Exchange. “It’s such a gorgeous spot, and it’s so easy to get to from Surfers Paradise. Added brownie points if you jump in for a refreshing dip while you’re at it.”

Curtis Falls is another stop that never lets him down. “This beautiful waterfall is only a 10-minute walk from the carpark, so it’s super easy to get to,” he says. “It’s heaven to swim in, and the rainforest you walk through to get there is just stunning.” The short walk is a bonus, making it an easy escape for those wanting a break from the city without an intense trek.

But Jimmy’s Gold Coast isn’t just about the outdoors, it’s also about finding good music. As a multi-talented indie-pop singer-songwriter, producer and guitarist, Jimmy feels most at home in places like Beatnik Records. “If you’re ever in need of some fresh vinyl, Joe at Beatnik Records has you covered. He is the loveliest guy, with the loveliest records,” he says.

“This place is everything you want in a record shop. Last time I was there, I picked up some Nina Simone and Jackson 5.” He loves that the shop feels personal, where conversations about music are just as important as the records on the shelves.

If he’s not digging through vinyls, you’ll find him at Strange Days Store. “With the freshest American and European-style clothes, Strange Days is exactly what you want in a beach town along the coast,” he says.

“The staff are super lovely, and you’ll definitely walk out looking 10 times fresher.” Vintage pieces here aren’t just about nostalgia, they fit the effortless Gold Coast vibe and make it tempting to replace your entire wardrobe with cool local finds.

And when it’s time for a feed? “Burleigh Local is the perfect beachy-style pub, with an amazing menu,” he recommends. “The steak sanga is a standout, alongside a crispy gin and tonic. Definitely a must when in Burleigh Heads.”

What makes these places stand out to him isn’t just what they offer, but the people behind them. Whether it’s a record store owner who knows his collection inside-out, or a vintage shop where the staff go out of their way to help, these spots make the Gold Coast feel like a community.
