In My Room with IVY

Get ready to watch one of our most atmospheric In My Room sessions yet courtesy of the rising Dunedin alternative rockers

This In My Room session is part of a new Scene Report on Dunedin. Check out the series here

We first met the stylish alternative rockers earlier in our Dunedin series, where bassist Connor Cooper told us about the background of his bandmates.

“Each of us have been greatly influenced by music from early on. Jesse and Louis grew up with a classical background, Louis playing violin in the Dunedin Youth Orchestra and Jesse in a church choir,” he said. “Jesse received classical voice training for all of his teen years and received multiple awards and was recognised for his work in the classical field.”

These striking foundations are on full display in their In My Room session, which was filmed and edited by Jack King. Watch in full above.

IVY — composed of Cooper alongside Jesse Hanan (vocals, rhythm guitar), James Axton (lead guitar/acting manager), Ocean Temple Wilson (drums), and Louis Stevenson (violin) — played a powerful rendition of “Colours in the Sky”, one of the standout tracks on their debut album, Hush.

Love Music?

Get your daily dose of everything happening in Australian/New Zealand music and globally.

Released last year, IVY’s first record painted them as a potent mixture between Radiohead and Muse, and sounded like nothing else in current New Zealand music. Hush was a fledgling band swinging big, and the end result was all the more impressive for it.

“Lyrically Hush moves through personal stories – death, distance, religion, falling in and out of love,” the band previously said. A handful of tracks were also about their hometown, including the simmering “Tall Grass”, inspired by the harsh weather of Dunedin, and the theatrical “Loon”, described as a ‘love-hate’ letter to the city.

They followed last year’s drop with a special vinyl edition of Hush last month (link below).

A limited edition red and black marbled vinyl of IVY’s debut album Hush is out now.
