Up-And-Coming Australian Artists: Flynn Gurry

We caught up with Gurry ahead of his ‘Gold’ EP tour, kicking off tonight, as part of our Up-And-Coming Australian Artists series

Flynn Gurry

Dara Munnis

Australian singer-songwriter Flynn Gurry is entering a compelling new creative chapter – and you’ll want to keep watch.

Steadily rising through Australia’s folk-pop circuit, the Warrnambool native is stepping into his most fully realised era yet with the release of his new EP Gold. It’s a body of work that leans into emotional honesty without losing its sense of warmth, pairing introspective songwriting with an increasingly confident sound.

At the centre of it all is “Bones”, a track that reframes heartbreak through hindsight, capturing the quiet realisation of a relationship that has run its course.

It’s a thematic shift that mirrors Gurry’s own artistic growth, pushing beyond the earnest folk stylings he’s known for into something grittier and more dynamic.

Following his first ever headline tour in 2025, Gurry is again hitting the road to celebrate the EP’s release with a string of shows – kicking off tonight (March 20th) in his hometown.

From Warrnambool, he’ll go on to play in Buelah, Halls Gap, Winchelsea, McLaren Vale, Maroochydore, Brisbane, Melbourne, Wollongong, Newcastle, Bathurst, Canberra and Sydney, before closing out on May 10th in Freshwater. See here for tickets and more details.

Flynn Gurry’s Gold is out now.

Rolling Stone AU/NZ: How did music influence you in your early life?

Flynn Gurry: We always had music playing in the family home, we went to Port Fairy Folk Festival as kids and now when I look back on what influenced me – those days just dancing with my siblings in the tents at Port Fairy come to mind.

What artists influenced you growing up?

I remember Dad having a John Butler Trio CD always on in his car and The Waifs in Mum’s. As a teenager I discovered artists like Kim Churchill, Ben Harper and my world was transformed.

When did you discover your passion for creating music?

I remember the first time stepping on stage and the feeling of moving someone with the music I’d made was so special.

What are some career highlights so far?

Playing triple j’s One Night Stand, many festival appearances at the likes of Woodford Folk Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival.

Are you looking forward to your EP being out?

I’m pretty nervous – I feel really strongly about this being my best work yet and something that I’m really proud of so the idea of sharing it with everyone is a little daunting. I have been road testing shows however and the response has been amazing.

And then you’re heading on tour! That must feel so exciting?

Yes! I’ve done quite a lot of touring in the last 18 months opening up for bands like The Dreggs and the Pierce Brothers but it’s going to be really exciting to be going back to some of the places and play my own show.

Tell us about your new single “Bones”. What’s the track about?

“Bones” is a song about heartbreak and the story of two people who have one day woken up and realised they have stayed way too long. When I took the song into the studio we really wanted to inject it with lots of energy.

What kind of personality traits and values do you believe it takes to succeed in the music industry?

In the Australian music scene everybody knows one another – particularly in the folk scene. I think it’s really important to just treat people with respect – we’re all at different levels but all aiming for a similar goal so I think it’s far more enjoyable to be nice to each other and succeed together.

How would you describe your music to a potential fan?

Twelve string guitar and big choruses. Think Mumford and Sons cross Vance Joy.

What are your goals for 2026 and beyond? What can fans expect from you this year?

Lots of touring, I’m playing my first international festival and tour in the UK after my Australian tour and then will lock back in to write the next record.
