‘In My Room’ with Floodlights

One of Australia’s best rock bands performed an incredible Rolling Stone AU/NZ ‘In My Room’ session ahead of a busy run of shows around their home country

Floodlights found time to perform an incredible Rolling Stone AU/NZ ‘In My Room’ session during a very busy career period.

The Melbourne rock band released their third studio album, Underneath, at the end of March, which they launched with a free surprise headline show at The Tote in their hometown.

Underneath was written amidst a heavy touring run around the UK, US, Europe, and Australia, but Floodlights’ reward has been a hugely positive critical and commercial response to the album.

Underneath was named the Double J Feature Album ahead of its release, and then went on to earn Floodlights their chart debut in Australia, with the band cracking the ARIA Australian Albums Chart Top 5 for the first time.

Reviews have been just as enthusiastic.

“Melbourne five-piece Floodlights were already among Australia’s most promising new rock acts, but they’ve hit their stride with Underneath,” wrote Double J, noting that the influence of the one and only Midnight Oil can be heard throughout the record.

The Sydney Morning Herald also compared the band to Midnight Oil, while Clunk Mag‘s five-star review was the most effusive, the publication writing, “Floodlights keep the gloves firmly off and bare all on an album that considers vulnerabilities, hopes, fear and passion.”

Underneath is the highly anticipated follow-up to 2023’s Painting of My Time, which earned Floodlights a nomination for the prestigious Australian Music Prize – don’t bet against them competing for the AMP again with their new album.

Watch the band’s full ‘In My Room’ session above, which arrives ahead of a massive run of shows around Australia.

They’ll celebrate their new album in Sydney, Byron Bay, Fremantle, Margaret River, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, and their hometown next month (see full dates below).

And there’s a reason that Floodlights have earned support slots for rock heavyweights such as The Killers, Pavement, and Amyl and the Sniffers: they’ve established themselves as one of the most formidable live acts in Australia in this decade so far.

Floodlights’ Underneath is out now via [PIAS[ Recordings.
