Song You Need to Know: Casey Barnes, ‘Summer Nights’

“I wanted to write something universal,” the country star says about the song

It’s no wonder Casey Barnes is ready to enjoy some “Summer Nights”.

The singer-songwriter recently racked up an impressive ‘holy trilogy’ of country music achievements: after winning the ARIA Award for Best Country Album last year (Light It Up), Barnes started 2023 by earning the top-selling Australian Album of the Year, followed by winning the prized Toyota Album of the Year at the Golden Guitar Awards.

That’s probably why, on his new catchy new single, he sounds in the mood for a party for a change. Written with Melbourne songwriting team MSquared (Michael Paynter and Michael DeLorenzis), “Summer Nights” is a happy ode to those hazy sunlit nights that are pleasingly fuelled by bubbling beer, strong whiskey, and, of course, some excellent tunes.

“I wanted to write something universal,” Barnes says about the song. “That’s what people come to see you for. They’re working their arses off all week in a job they may not really love, so on the weekend they just want to let their hair down with their best friends, not take life too seriously, and have some fun.”

Following the release of “Summer Nights”, Barnes will be hitting the road for a series of shows across the East Coast in the coming months (see full dates below). The country star is also set to return to the US this year, having recently enjoyed some stellar writing sessions with some of Nashville’s finest songwriters.

Casey Barnes’ “Summer Nights” is out now.
