Song You Need to Know: BENEE, ‘Off the Rails’

The New Zealand singer-songwriter returns with an unhinged track produced by the same duo behind ‘Green Honda’.

BENEE is back with a new single.

Currently opening for Tate McRae on her US tour, the LA-based New Zealand singer-songwriter has dropped “Off the Rails”, a thrashy pop-rock rush of feminine rage just shy of two minutes.

The track was produced and co-written by Elvira Anderfjärd and Luka Kloser, the same production duo behind Addison Rae’s buzzy new album Addison and BENEE’s 2023 single “Green Honda”, alongside longtime collaborator Josh Fountain.

“It’s an aggressive, angry, chaotic product of my navigating the current state of the world and channeling my existential dread,” BENEE explains. “It’s feminine rage—sick of being pushed around and embracing the chaos.”

She adds, “Luka and Elvira are two incredible producers in the music industry right now. First we made ‘Green Honda’, and then ‘Off The Rails’. I felt this energy was really needed and perfectly places a certain tone in my storyline. It honestly was one of the few studio sessions I’ve ever done with only women, which brings such a different creative energy. I felt so comfortable really saying anything. In a typically male-dominated industry, I had a different connection with them. We had a lot of fun making this song and I love it, I hope listeners do too!”

“Off the Rails” follows singles “Animal” and “Sad Boiii”, and will appear on her upcoming second album, due before November 2025, her first LP since 2020’s Hey U X.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1’s Future Artists with Sian Eleri, BENEE revealed, “I’m waiting for one feature right now. But it’s basically done, and it’s coming out before November. There are a couple, a few. I’m so excited. I think people will really like the artists on it.”

The single’s accompanying music video, directed by British music video direction team Bedroom, is out now.

2024 saw BENEE celebrate the 5th anniversary of her breakthrough hit “Supalonely” and tour with Olivia Rodrigo and Wallows.
