Wellington-bred but now calling Melbourne home, Bakers Eddy tap into hometown nostalgia on their latest single, “Manners Street”.

Frontman Ciarann Babbington describes it as “almost a tribute to our Wellington – the one we grew up in, our experiences, our people, and the places.”

The bright pop-punk track is the first taste of the band’s upcoming EP, due later this year, and lands just ahead of their SXSW Austin and New York’s The New Colossus appearances next month.

For Bakers Eddy – rounded out by childhood friends Jamie Gordon (drums) and twin brothers Ian (bass) and Alex Spagnolo (guitar) – “Manners Street” arrives at a pivotal moment.

Following their acclaimed 2022 album, Love Boredom Bicycles (Ivy League), and a relentless touring schedule—headlining their own national run and supporting the likes of Grandson, Maggie Lindemann, Stand Atlantic, and WAA – they found themselves grappling with a sense of disconnection.

“The four of us spent a long time last year reconnecting with each other and one of the things that came out as a result was this shared feeling of being a little lost in ourselves and who we are,” Babbington reflects. “Through those conversations, we realised a big part of that was we’ve been away for so long now that we’ve, in a way, forgotten our roots.”

Writing “Manners Street”, he says, became a way to bridge that distance – not just with their memories, but with the part of themselves they felt was missing. “It’s also special to us because all four of us are connected lyrically to it. They’re our shared stories and memories (aside from the parking lot one, that’s just for me), so in a way it’s the most ‘Bakers Eddy’ Bakers Eddy song we’ve made so far.”

The new single and upcoming EP were self-produced alongside Vincent McIntyre (Fan Girl, Mr Industry, Elizabeth M. Drummond), mixed by Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, Weezer), and mastered by Emily Lazar (Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Sia).
