Tim Minchin Spreads His Wings and Revisits the Past on ‘Time Machine’

Comedian, actor, and singer-songwriter Tim Minchin dips into Britpop, balladry, and more on his third studio album

Tim Minchin’s new album is no laughing matter. No, really. For his third studio effort, the Australian entertainer unpacks an age of works that have, until now, remained locked away. A busy career will do that. The track “Time Machine” is a summer daze, a nod to late Beatles, and peak Britpop; melancholy offset with gunslinging yip yars. On “I Wouldn’t Like You”, Minchin shows a flair for structure with a flourish of lyrical bastardry.

On “Dark Side”, a game of two halves, Minchin brags and broods, “I can have a dark side, too.” No doubt. “Pop Song” could be “Prick Song”. The single “Ruby” is a mid-tempo rumination on the cycle of flawed parenting. Time Machine is flawed too, but Minchin appears to be having fun and spreading his wings as a recording artist. There’s more than enough here to reach new fans and serve his existing global base.
