The Rubens Search for Meaning on Fifth Album ‘Soda’

Relationships, regret and reflective lyrics on the Camden band’s newest collection of polished alt-rock

The Rubens

Giulia McGuaran

The Rubens explore relationships, regret and the search for meaning on their fifth studio album, Soda.

Produced by longtime collaborator Konstantin Kersting (Spacey Jane, Genesis Owusu, Peach PRC), the album blends polished alt-rock grooves with hints of synths and electronics.

Reflective lyrics swing through emotional highs and lows, offering comfort and escape while always seeking an optimistic path. Standouts include the introspective “Pets and Drugs”, opening with a plea to rewrite the past: “If I could reset it all, go back to the beginning”. The infectious anthem “Good Mood” promises to be a live favourite, driven by its anthemic chorus. Tracks like “Cornerstone” and “Roll Away” reveal a softer side, featuring frontman Sam Margin’s robust vocals over easygoing melodies.

Recorded in their Camden hometown in a self-built WWII bunker studio, Soda showcases the band’s ongoing evolution and invites further experimentation.
