Brisbane’s Confidence Man have always straddled the fine line between tongue-in-cheek pop and serious party music, and it’s a formula they’ve perfected on their excellent third album.
Now based in the UK, singer-dancers Janet Planet and Sugar Bones and producers Clarence McGuffie and Reggie Goodchild have immersed themselves in London’s queer club scene, emerging with their clubbiest, most anthemic music yet.
Starting with “Who Knows What You’ll Find?”, the first quarter of the album goes hard, raising energy levels through the roof.
There are highlights galore: “Breakbeat” is an old-school delight; “Sicko” sees Sugar Bones take the lead on what sounds like a lost Primal Scream Screamadelica song; and the title track is a late-night rave classic in waiting.
Con Man know how to have fun, and every note on the album is embedded with one prime directive: get loose, go hard and have a good time.
