Heartbreak, Humour and Hooks Aplenty on Allday’s Latest

The rapper’s at the top of his game on concept album ‘The Necklace’

Allday

Daphne Nguyen*

After exploring indie-pop on last album Drinking with My Smoking Friends, Allday, aka Tom Gaynor, is back in full rap beast mode for a loose concept album about acting like a bit of a dirtbag, but actually having the maturity to admit it and be held accountable.

Concept or not, this features some of Gaynor’s best music to date: “Toxic” taps the sped-up soul samples and gospel choirs of Kanye West at his best; “Miss You Still”, which features Cub Sport and interpolates Ben Lee’s “Cigarettes Will Kill You”, seems destined to top the next triple j Hottest 100, and “Bon Voyage”, a yodel-sampling tribute to a fallen friend, is genuinely affecting.

With heartbreak, humour (“I make hot girls take the bin out to give them life experience,” Gaynor raps on “Bratz”) and hooks aplenty, this is Allday operating at the top of his game.
