Nominations for the 88th Academy Awards were announced on Thursday evening, and The Revenant dominated the field, earning nods in 12 different categories, including Best Picture. In recent weeks, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s epic saga of frontier revenge has seemed like one of the only sure things in an otherwise unusually unpredictable field, but the sheer number of nominations it received was one of the biggest surprises of a morning that was filled with them.
Also vying for the film world’s top prize are The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, Room, and Spotlight. Of those films, Mad Max: Fury Road was given the biggest reason to smile, as George Miller’s blockbuster reboot of his beloved post-apocalyptic series drove away with 10 nominations, including one for Best Director. The Martian was another big winner — epitomizing an Oscar field that skews more towards studio hits than it has in recent years, Ridley Scott’s sci-fi survival tale landed five nominations, including a Best Actor nomination for Matt Damon (he’ll face off against The Revenant star Leonardo DiCaprio). Even Star Wars: The Force Awakens managed to blast away with four nominations, highlighted by a nod for Best Editing.
The morning was also kind to a number of smaller films, including Sundance charmer Brooklyn (three nominations), and the harrowingly claustrophobic Room (four nominations). The leading ladies from those two films, Saoirse Ronan and Brie Larson, respectively, will square off in a Best Actress race that’s rounded out by Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, and Charlotte Rampling.
On the other hand, Todd Haynes’ Carol, a revered period melodrama about a love affair that blossoms between two women in Fifties Manhattan, didn’t receive the same love from the Academy as it has from critics, and was denied nominations for either Best Picture or Best Director.
The 88th Academy Awards will be held on February 28th. The ceremony will air on ABC, and will be hosted by Chris Rock. Check out the complete list of nominations below.
