The most anticipated night in Hollywood is finally here!
On Sunday, the biggest names in film gathered for the 96th Academy Awards, marking the official end to awards season. Jimmy Kimmel returns to host the ceremony for the third time, which is airing live from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on ABC.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is the most nominated film at the 2024 Academy Awards with 13 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., and Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt, who is now a first-time Oscar nominee. The blockbuster film is also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Cinematography, among others.
Yorgos Lanthimos trails Nolan with Poor Things, earning nominations across 11 categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Emma Stone, and Best Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo. It’s also up for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and more.
While Oppenheimer led nominations, its bright pink summer counterpart Barbie collected eight nods, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. With no nominations for Barbie herself, Margot Robbie, or Best Director for Greta Gerwig, the film did appear in both supporting categories. America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling are nominated for Best Support Actress and Actor, respectively. The film also scored two nominations for Best Original Song, for Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s “I’m Just Ken” and Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “What Was I Made For?”
