Academy Award winner Olivia Colman lends her voice to a mischievous talking fox in the first trailer for The Fox, the award-winning Australian dark comedy.
Distributed locally by Madman Entertainment, the feature stars Jai Courtney and Emily Browning alongside Damon Herriman, Claudia Doumit, Zlatko Burić, Frankie J. Holden, Heather Mitchell, Peter O’Brien, Kim Gyngell, and Sam Neill, with Miranda Otto and Academy Award winner Olivia Colman lending her voice to the film’s titular fox.
Described as a darkly comic folktale blending satire and surrealism, The Fox follows Nick (Courtney), the well-meaning heir to a wealthy rural family, who discovers his fiancée Kori (Browning) has been unfaithful. After capturing a talking fox, voiced by Colman, Nick is offered an extraordinary bargain: spare the animal’s life in exchange for the chance to transform Kori into his “perfect” partner by pushing her into a magical hole.
What initially appears to solve Nick’s problems quickly takes an unsettling turn, as Kori’s increasingly unusual behaviour forces him to confront the consequences of trying to change someone else rather than himself.
The film will arrive in cinemas in October, after a strong festival run. It was named one of Variety’s eight best films at SXSW Austin, before winning the GIO Audience Award for Best Australian Feature at the Sydney Film Festival and the Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature at the Calgary Underground Film Festival.
The Fox will also screen at this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival.
Filmed in South Australia, the production was backed by Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation. It was produced by Causeway Films, with international sales handled by Protagonist Pictures.
