Maya Hawke discussed the blurring lines between being an actor and how celebrity and social media plays a factor in the mix during a recent Happy Sad Confused podcast. Hawke has considered deleting her Instagram, but apparently it matters big to some producers, and can influence whether or not a film will be made.

“It’s like, I don’t care about Instagram. Instagram sucks. Right, well just so you know, if you have over this many followers you can get the movie funded,” Hawke said during a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “It’s a really confusing line to walk.”

The Stranger Things actress added that several “smart directors” have dealt with producers who require a certain number of Instagram followers from their cast before they will go forward with the film.

“I’m talking with [some directors] about how I’m going to delete my Instagram and they’re like, ‘Just so you know when I’m casting a movie with some producers, they hand me a sheet with the amount of collective followers I have to get of the cast that I cast,’” Hawke said on the podcast. “‘So if you delete your Instagram and I lose those followers, understand that these are the kinds of people I need to cast around you.’”

Hawke added that big social media followings are not the most important factor for all directors, saying that maybe there are “10 of them” that have the “freedom” where “reputation” is enough.

“You can really focus and sit there and make a film with them,” Hawke said. “And I’ve been privileged enough to really work with three in my life. I got to work with three sets that were like this. I got to work with Quentin [Tarantino] (Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood), I got to work with Bradley Cooper (Maestro), and I got to work with Wes Anderson (Asteroid City).”She also discussed working on music while acting. “Music is and always has been a part of my life every day,” she said. “The what stops and starts is where it sits in terms of my career,” adding that she is always writing and making music “and finding new and different ways to have it be a part of my career.”

Hawke will reprise her role as Robin Buckley for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things when it returns to Netflix this year.
