For most people, $20 million is a life-changing amount of money. If offered even a fraction, who would say no? That question becomes a major moral dilemma in the first official trailer for The Rip, the upcoming Netflix film in which Matt Damon and Ben Affleck play Miami Police Department officers who make a discovery of a lifetime during a stash house seizure.
The search began with a tip. Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Damon) and Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Affleck) led the search with the understanding that $300,000 was stashed away somewhere. But when their money-detecting dogs led them to the cash, it was millions more than what they expected to find. “It’d be so much easier if we just stole this money,” the lieutenant considers.
But of course, no one is hiding that much money in their ceiling without having ties to trouble. While standing in the stash house, the detective answers the house phone. “No one needs to die tonight,” a distorted voice tells him. “You have 30 minutes to get out of that house.
Dumars and Dyrne need a game plan, but they aren’t even sure if they’re on the same page. “You think I want to jack this rip?” Dumars asks in slight disbelief, as if he hadn’t joked about doing exactly that. Byrne tells him, “I don’t trust you right now, and that’s a fucking problem.” They always ask themselves, “Are we the good guys?” Now, the question has a more complicated answer.
Out Jan. 16, The Rip also stars Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sasha Calle, Néstor Carbonell, Lina Esco, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler. “If the audience falls in love with the characters, you got them,” director Joe Carnahan told Netflix. “Because at some point you’re going to get your heart broken, you just don’t know by whom.”
