Danny DeVito remembered shooting Batman Returns with “goddess” Michelle Pfeiffer while speaking with Colin Farrell for Variety. The actor played Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. the Penguin, opposite Pfeiffer’s Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) in Tim Burton‘s 1992 film.

In the interview, DeVito and Farrell compared their experiences portraying the comic book villain. “I had Michelle Pfeiffer,” DeVito said of who played Catwoman in the movie. “I’m not comparing anything, but I’m just saying, she was a goddess. If I knew she was going to be in a scene that day…”

“Did you brush your teeth that morning?” Farrell replied. DeVito responded, “I got all flushed. Put extra makeup on — ‘Give me another pound of makeup.’ It was very difficult.” He added of working with the actress, “Just so wonderful. And I lusted after her.”

Farrell then asked what “form” that lust took. “It was Oswald that was lustful,” DeVito explained of playing the character. “I kind of feel like she liked it. She liked Oswald.”

“I loved working on the movie and I loved working with Tim, and the whole ideas of Oswald was so much fun to do,” DeVito told Entertainment Weekly at the time. “At first I was a little bit hesitant about doing the comic, but then I got into the fact that I’ve always been a big fan of Michelle Pfeiffer’s, and the Penguin obviously lusts after Catwoman. So I figured I’d put those two together, and then it was also in the middle of the pandemic, which we’re still fighting with. I thought it would be good if Penguin had a little bit of Robin Hood in him.”

Farrell plays Oswald in Max series The Penguin, which debuted its first season last year. The show, created by Lauren LeFranc, is an extensive of the new “Batman Saga,” which began with Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Robert Pattinson. The series picks up one week after the events of The Batman and follows the villain as he claims his power as the Penguin in Gotham’s underworld by any means necessary.
