Sometimes it takes a spicy wing to get Dakota Johnson talking. The Materialists actress stopped by Hot Ones to answer questions amid chicken-eating and discussed what she thinks of the state of Hollywood right now.
“It’s hard to be on jobs where you don’t have creative input… It’s hard when creative decisions are made by committee and by people who don’t even really watch movies, or know anything about them,” Johnson told host Sean Evans as she barely got through each of the hot wings. “And that tends to be what’s occurring a lot. I think also, when something does well, studios want to keep that going, so they remake the same things.”
She added: “But humans don’t want that. They want fresh. They want to feel new things, experience new things, see new things. So I guess it’s all just a bit of a mess right now.”
The actress — who launched her own TeaTime Pictures production company — also discussed her early memories of being on set with her parents, Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, saying she always wanted to “be in the place where they were.” She joked about Madame Web, “I’m also not a superhero. Tried. Failed,” she said, looking at the camera.
Johnson stars alongside Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal in Celine Song’s Materialists, which premieres Friday. A Rolling Stone review praised Johnson’s performance as Lucy in the film.
“Johnson gives her hero a jadedness that somehow stops short of being caustic or overly cynical. It’s not that Lucy doesn’t believe in love. She simply, not to mention literally, can’t afford to,” read the David Fear-written take. “Lucy’s a material girl, living in a material world. Who has time for fairy-tale ideas of romance when you’re dealing with recession-era realities and making sure the rent’s paid?”
