Street Fighter has knocked out the competition at the Australian box office, leading a weekend dominated by new releases.

The action film debuted at No. 1 with $2.36 million over the weekend (Thursday, October 15th – Sunday, October 18th), comfortably ahead of fellow newcomer Jailer 2, which opened in second place with $1.42 million.

The two films pushed last week’s box office winners further down the rankings, with Verity slipping to third place after previously holding the top spot. The thriller added another $1.3 million to its Australian box office total, which has now surpassed the $10 million milestone to reach $10.1 million.

Another new release, Sense and Sensibility, entered the chart at No. 4 with $926,000 over the weekend. Including advance screenings, the period romantic drama has accumulated $1.12 million nationally.

Rounding out the top five was the Jessica Chastain-led horror film Other Mommy, which earned $711,000 over the weekend, bringing its cumulative Australian box office to $2.73 million.

Further down the chart, Heart of the Beast landed in sixth place with $525,000, taking its total earnings to $7.12 million. Resident Evil followed closely behind in seventh with $517,000, bringing its Australian box office total to $12.9 million.

Meanwhile, Hadestown: The Musical made its chart debut at No. 8, earning $486,000 over the weekend. Following its Tuesday release, the musical has accumulated $721,000 at the local box office.
