Australia Can’t Stop Talking About ‘Obsession’ as Horror Hit Surges at Box Office

Curry Barker’s viral horror hit Obsession continues to tighten its grip on Australian audiences, holding strong at the local box office amid a crowded weekend of new releases.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu topped the Australian box office on debut, grossing $6.43 million over the weekend (Thursday, May 21st-Sunday, May 24th), followed by Michael which grossed a further $3.01 million in its fifth week.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 dropped to third with $2.49 million, bringing its total to over $36 million in its fourth week.

Curry Barker’s horror film Obsession, now in its second week, grossed $1.63 million, followed by The Sheep Detectives, starring Hugh Jackman, with $1.07 million.

Drishyam 3, the third instalment of the popular Indian crime-thriller series, sat in sixth with $776,000 on debut, followed by André Øvredal‘s supernatural horror film Passenger, which grossed $533,000 on debut. Warner Bros.‘s Mortal Kombat II brought in $418,000 in its third week, followed by Project Hail Mary with $194,000.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie grossed $186,000, followed by In the Grey with $177,000. Universal Pictures‘ new rom-com Finding Emily, starring Angourie Rice, rounded out the top 10 on debut with $153,000.

The Australian star has found great success in the US, and is now turning her sights to the UK with Finding Emily. In a recent interview with Variety Australia, Rice said rather than chasing stardom and celebrity, she wants to tell stories she believes in.

“I try to not think about it too much, because… I just want to keep going and keep making movies that I love and that I’m passionate about, and keep working with cool people.”
