Family films continued to dominate the Australian box office, leaving Supergirl to settle for third in its opening weekend.
Despite arriving with one of the year’s biggest studio campaigns, Supergirl was unable to topple the animated competition, as family audiences continued to drive ticket sales, according to Hoyts. Starring Australian actor Milly Alcock, the DC Studios release opened with just $2.43 million, compared to Toy Story 5 with $6.17 million, and Minions & Monsters with $3.36 million.
Elsewhere, horror hit Obsession continued its impressive run, grossing $1.42 million in its seventh weekend, bringing its Australian total to $20.91 million. Disclosure Day, starring Emily Blunt, rounded out the top five with $935,000, bringing its overall total to $8.27 million.
Further down the chart, Dear You debuted in sixth place with $755,000, rising to $789,000 including advance screenings. Backrooms added $424,000 for a total of $13.92 million, while the sixth Scary Movie earned $373,000 to reach $8.46 million.
Michael continued its remarkable theatrical run, earning another $233,000 in its tenth weekend. The biopic has now grossed $45.55 million locally, making it the highest-grossing biopic of all time. Carry On Jatta 4 rounded out the top 10 with a $223,000 opening weekend.
According to Hoyts, cinema admissions are up 16% year-on-year as Australia approaches the halfway point of 2026, with the top 10 films accounting for 89.48% of the national weekend box office.
