After bragging that this year’s Thanksgiving meals were marginally cheaper than the year before, President Donald Trump is continuing to spread holiday cheer. On Friday, the president vowed to cancel all executive orders signed by President Joe Biden using an autopen.
On Truth Social, Trump claimed that “Sleepy Joe Biden” signed 92 percent of documents with the machine, which is used to automate signatures. “The Autopen is not allowed to be used if approval is not specifically given by the President of the United States,” he wrote. “The Radical Left Lunatics circling Biden around the beautiful Resolute Desk in the Oval Office took the Presidency away from him. I am hereby cancelling all Executive Orders, and anything else that was not directly signed by Crooked Joe Biden, because the people who operated the Autopen did so illegally. Joe Biden was not involved in the Autopen process and, if he says he was, he will be brought up on charges of perjury. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Despite the autopen’s long history in the White House — it was invented in 1803, and first used by Thomas Jefferson — Trump has been particularly fixated on Biden’s use of it. Earlier this year, he attempted to undo the record-breaking wave of commutations and pardons made by Biden, claiming his predecessor’s staff used the machine without Biden’s knowledge. Trump declared the pardons “VOID, VACANT, AND OF NO FURTHER FORCE OR EFFECT, because of the fact that they were done by Autopen.”
Biden responded to these claims last summer, telling The New York Times of Trump and his allies, “They’re liars. They know it. They’ve done so badly. They’ve lied so consistently about almost everything they’re doing. The best thing they can do is try to change the focus and focus on something else.” He also told the outlet that he “made every single one of those” clemency decisions.
In late September, Trump doubled down on his fixation with Biden’s use of autopen. On his new Presidential Walk of Fame, which was erected on the White House exterior and features portraits of past (and present) presidents, Trump placed a photo of an autopen signing Biden’s name instead of the 46th POTUS’ headshot. Maybe they’ll make room for one in the new massive ballroom?
