Joe Biden is undergoing a new phase of treatment as he battles an aggressive form of prostate cancer, the former president’s office said Saturday.
In a statement, Biden’s spokeswoman Kelly Scully said, “As part of a treatment plan for prostate cancer, President Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy and hormone treatment.”
The radiation treatment, which Biden started last month, is expected to span five weeks, the New York Times reports. Biden is also taking a pill form of hormone medication, NBC News added.
In May, Biden’s personal office revealed that the former president, who turns 83 in November, had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer after a “routine physical exam” uncovered a “small nodule.”
“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” Biden’s office said in the statement.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The president and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”
Biden himself said in a statement posted on social media, “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”
