Jeff Daniels broke out the acoustic guitar on MSNBC’s Deadline: White House yesterday to perform an original protest song that was inspired by the “No Kings” protests against Donald Trump.

In introducing the track, Daniels said, “This is a song I wrote called ‘Crazy World,’ which is how I cope.” Despite the inspiration for the song, and Daniels’ own distaste for Trump, “Crazy World” isn’t overtly political, with the actor instead filling his verses with little moments of kindness and joy: A dog wagging its tail; singing songs at daybreak and sunset; strangers shaking hands; a quiet moment of affection between an old married couple.

Daniels pulls all this together on the chorus, singing, “This crazy world’s gone crazy/Who am I to judge?/Nice to know in a world full of hate/There’s someone out there still making love.”

Prior to performing “Crazy World,” Daniels spoke about the “No Kings” protests, praising them for bringing attention “to what’s going on to the people who have checked out, who just can’t deal with it.” He also expressed dismay with Trump sharing an AI-generated video that showed the president piloting a fighter jet and dumping what looked like feces on protesters.

“Do we really have to treat people like that?” Daniels said, arguing that no past Republicans would’ve stooped to such a level. He continued: “I think it matters. It may not matter right away when you’re voting, but down the road if he doesn’t deliver on the economy like he promised he would, then that stuff will start to add up. And they’ll get tired of it, and they’ll vote for change, which is what they always do.”
