How Matthew McConaughey Trusted His Spirit and Achieved His Dreams

Born in Texas just a few months after the moon landing, Matthew McConaughey has built a career out of trusting his spirit and chasing his dreams.

When Matthew McConaughey made his debut appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2017, the host was quick to praise the Texan actor’s performance as Rick Peck in the 2008 action comedy Tropic Thunder. “[That] might be one of the greatest comedic performances of all time,” said Colbert.

But Colbert’s next compliment had nothing to do with McConaughy’s three-decade film career. “You know what a fan I am of your job as chief storyteller at Wild Turkey,” Colbert said, before retrieving a bottle of Kentucky bourbon whiskey from under his desk.

As Colbert poured out a couple of drams of 17-year-aged Wild Turkey for himself and his guest, McConaughey began to elaborate on his close relationship with the Lawrenceburg, Kentucky bourbon distillery.

Being a life-long explorer, McConaughey had some ideas about how he and Wild Turkey could work together on the brand’s creative direction. This enthusiasm was nothing new for McConaughey.

Born in Texas just a few months after the moon landing, Matthew McConaughey has built a career out of trusting his spirit and chasing his dreams. After finishing university in Texas, McConaughey landed odd jobs in TV ads and music videos before getting his big break in Richard Linklater’s 1993 cult classic, Dazed and Confused

He’s continued to forge a path as an ambitious actor in the decades since, landing roles in films as diverse as Magic Mike, Dallas Buyers Club, Mud and The Wolf of Wall Street.

McConaughey’s penchant for trusting his spirit is what led him to becoming a creative director for Wild Turkey. In this capacity, he began working with Wild Turkey’s master distiller, Eddie Russell, on a bourbon of his own.

“I wanted to create my favourite bourbon with him,” McConaughey told Men’s Journal.

For inspiration, Russell and McConaughey looked west from Wild Turkey’s headquarters in Kentucky to McConaughey’s home state of Texas. Russell and McConaughey had the idea to refine their new bourbon using charcoal from Texan mesquite. “Mesquite is a quintessential Texas wood that we cook with all the time,” McConaughey explained to Men’s Journal.

The result is Longbranch, a small-batch bourbon whiskey refined one time with charcoal from white American oak and a second time with charcoal from Texan mesquite. “Longbranch, in its simplest form, is an extended hand, inviting a friend into your family,” McConaughey said of the mellow and mildly smoky bourbon that he and Russell created.

Wild Turkey’s partnership with McConaughey is representative of the brand’s broader emphasis on exploration and discovery. This ethos is at the heart of Wild Turkey’s new range of premium, contemporary bourbon premixes: the Wild Turkey Discovery Series.

Wild Turkey caters to people who’re determined to forge their own path, who’re ambitious, independent and eager to seek out new things. The Discovery Series’ two introductory flavours slot neatly into this framework, with one made using Wild Turkey bourbon, dry ginger ale and lime and the other pairing Wild Turkey bourbon with lemon soda.

The Discovery Series joins Wild Turkey’s existing range of premix drinks, while also broadening the Wild turkey range. The Discovery Series pairs zesty and pleasantly acidic flavours with Wild Turkey’s uniquely oaky and somewhat spicy whiskey. The products in the Discovery Series come in at 4.2%ABV and are designed to be served ice cold and savoured in a relaxed setting.

To celebrate the launch of the Discovery Series, Wild Turkey will be running a promotion where entrants can win a double pass to a secret acoustic session in the wilderness with ARIA-winning indie band Boy & Bear.
