The first trailer for Klara and the Sun has arrived, offering a look at Academy Award winner Taika Waititi’s adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro’s bestselling novel.
The story centres on Klara (Jenna Ortega), an ‘artificial friend’ who wants nothing more than to find the perfect home. When Klara meets Josie (Mia Tharia), the two immediately sense a kindred spirit in each other. Josie has a fraught relationship with her mother (Amy Adams), and the family has suffered great loss – but Klara’s innocent wonder and unwavering loyalty begin to heal them and bring light to Josie’s complicated world.
Alongside Ortega, Tharia, and Adams, the film also features Steve Buscemi, Natasha Lyonne, and Rachel House.
Ishiguro’s novel, his eighth, was published in 2021 and was longlisted for the Booker Prize. He was previously awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2017, with the Swedish Academy citing his work for revealing “the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world”.

Waititi’s adaptation follows previously critically acclaimed films including Jojo Rabbit, which won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2020. Waititi starred in the film alongside Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, and Roman Griffin Davis. His other directing credits include Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
Klara and the Sun will hit cinemas on October 22nd.
