Why Josh Heuston Pushed for an Australian Soundtrack in ‘Off Campus’

Josh Heuston opens up to Rolling Stone AU/NZ about helping shape the Australian-heavy soundtrack of ‘Off Campus’

Australian actor Josh Heuston has revealed he pushed for Australian music to feature heavily throughout Prime Video’s hit new series Off Campus, saying it was important his character actually felt Australian onscreen.

With a soundtrack featuring AC/DC, The Kid LAROI, G Flip, George Alice, Jet, REDD. (who we’ve just named in our 2026 Future of Music list) and more, Heuston – who plays musician Justin Kohl in the wildly popular adaptation – explained that once the decision was made to make his character Australian, he wanted that identity reflected in the music.

“When we made Justin Australian, I was saying all of the music influences from him have to be Australian,” he told Rolling Stone AU/NZ. “Otherwise, it makes no sense for him to have the accent. Like, you’d have to be influenced if you’ve grown up in Australia long enough to have an accent.”

One scene in particular perfectly captured that vision with Justin passionately reacting to a song, declaring, “I fucking love this song!” – a moment Heuston felt needed to spotlight an Australian act. “I’m like, we needed that song to be an Australian artist,” he laughed.

While he admitted he was “softly influencing” many of the music choices tied to Justin’s scenes, he was quick to praise the show’s music department for embracing the idea from the beginning.

“The music team was super inclusive,” he said. “I was like, ‘We need it to sound Australian and Justin to have an Australian feel’, [and] I guess it came across!

“I can’t take credit for it,” he continued. “But the music team was super like, ‘Fuck yeah, like more Australian music’.”
