The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising the title role, will not be moving forward after Hulu passed on the project, the actress announced on social media Saturday.

The Buffy reboot was announced in February 2025 with Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao and original Buffy executive producer Gail Berman leading the project. While Gellar was initially reluctant to portray the vampire slayer again, she eventually agreed to return to the role after teaming up with writing duo Lilla and Nora Zuckerman. “I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there,” Gellar said at the time.

However, 13 months later, it appears the reboot — titled Buffy: Never Sunnydale — isn’t happening. “So I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale,” Gellar told fans in a video posted on Instagram.

“I want to thank Chloé Zhao, because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you, and this doesn’t change any of that.”

Gellar closed out her video by telling fans, “If the apocalypse comes, you can still beep me.”

The Buffy series, based on the 1992 horror comedy film, originally aired on the WB five seasons and later moved to the UPN for two seasons, ending in 2003. The spinoff series Angel starring David Boreanaz also ran for five seasons. It’s unclear if the Buffy revival will be shopped to other streamers, but until then, check out Rolling Stone’s definitive ranking of every Buffy episode.
