Stereolab are returning to New Zealand this year.

On the heels of last year’s album Instant Holograms on Metal Film, the acclaimed avant-pop outfit will play at Wellington’s Meow Nui on Wednesday, June 26th, and Auckland’s Powerstation on Thursday, June 25th.

The Auckland show comes as part of Strange Universe festival’s winter edition, where they will be joined by the likes of Cate Le Bon, The Veils, Dry Cleaning, Mothers Temple, Cass McCombs, and more.

Tickets will go on sale at 10am on Monday, March 16th. A presale will run from 10am on Friday, March 13th – sign up here.

Instant Holograms on Metal Film marked Stereolab’s first album in fifteen years, following their celebrated reunion in 2019. Rolling Stone described it as “an hour of prime-grade Stereolab” in a glowing four-star review.

“…What makes Instant Holograms on Metal Film such a crucial listen for this moment is the stormy yet ultimately hopeful emotionalism powering its motorized beats and musical oscillations,” we wrote.

On the live circuit, Stereolab have recently played well-received shows at London’s Royal Festival Hall, New York City’s Brooklyn Steel, Chicago’s Metro, Los Angeles’ Bellwether, and more.

The shows in Aotearoa will follow three Australian shows, set for Melbourne on June 18th, Brisbane on June 20th, and Sydney on June 21st. See here for details.

Stereolab have a strong relationship with Australia, with Aussie musician Mary Hansen acting as co-lead vocalist in the band between 1992 and 2002. Hansen sadly passed away in 2002 at the age of 36. They also previously played iconic local festivals Laneway and Golden Plains.
