The latest single from Adelaide indie-rock outfit Sunsick Daisy is one that could be taken straight from a 2000s coming-of-age film.

Full of nostalgia, yearning, and infectious energy, “Waiting For” captures the emotional tension of trying to define a relationship.

It blends the band’s hazy, reverb-drenched style of songwriting with a tinge of country-infused heartache, led by the dreamy vocal combination of Kane Gabell and Sarah Grainger.

“‘Waiting For’ is a story of a situationship in which two people are caught up in a push and pull of emotions and how they deal with it,” Gabell explains. “While on tour, I listened to a lot of [country singer] Glen Campbell in the back of the car. I loved the way he would tell stories through his music and it was definitely an inspiration for this.”

“Waiting For’ builds on the bold new Sunsick Daisy era, introduced in October with the single “Pale Blue”. The latest single continues to expand their colourful, eclectic sound, while keeping their signature atmospheric shoegaze at the core.

It is a magnetic standout in the band’s ever-growing catalogue – a wistful, weightless release grounded by the commanding tones of new bassist Ella Phillips and Gabell and Grainger’s intertwining, mesmerising harmonies.

Sunsick Daisy are having a killer run. They were recently picked by The Temper Trap to write alongside Middle Kids, Julia Jacklin, and more for the inaugural APRA AMCOS Gudinski Songhubs, and just supported Pacific Avenue at their Adelaide show on Saturday night. And in May, they’ll support Ball Park Music at their local show.
