This In My Room is part of a new Scene Report on Dunedin. Check out the series here.
Meet The Beatniks, the next exciting Dunedin act to put on an In My Room session for us.
The up-and-coming rock four-piece took to a pine forest in Purakaunui, just north east of their hometown, to play a handful of songs.

2025 was a great year for The Beatniks with the release of their well-received EP Today / Tomorrow, which successfully built on the momentum of previous single “Another Day”, which climbed all the way to the top of the SRN Top 10 last August.
According to a press release, their EP marked “a turning point for the band, shifting away from the surf-grunge energy of their debut album Archetype and moving into fresh, unexplored alt-rock territory.”

The band called their latest record “a concept album for the modern attention span,” which is why it came in just shy of 20 minutes.
“Each track stands on its own, but we’re excited to see who notices the subtle threads that tie them together,” they added. “We tried to encapsulate all the emotions that come with this infamously confusing stage of life.”
Today / Tomorrow was recorded not far from Dunedin at Seaward Sounds in Port Chalmers, with the band working alongside Tom Bell on mixing and mastering with his lovely assistant Rory Humm.
The Beatniks’ EP received positive reviews from critics, with Muzic.NZ praising it as “an eclectic mix of songs that, rather than being a sampler, is more of a journey through The Beatniks’ creative process,” adding that it’s “[a] thoroughly enjoyable listen.”
They kicked 2026 off with the release of an official music video for EP highlight “Niksick”, filmed on their Aotearoa tour last year and made with support by NZ On Air (watch above).
“Thank you to everyone who came out to all of the shows across the motu, we couldn’t have been more stoked how it all went!” The Beatniks wrote on social media following the conclusion of their tour, shouting out their tour mates, fellow Dunedin series alumni IVY.
The Beatniks’ Today / Tomorrow EP is out now. Follow the band’s music here.
