Stereolab are returning to Australia.

The acclaimed avant-pop outfit will tour on these shores for just the fourth time this June, playing shows in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney (see full dates below).

Stereolab are touring in support of comeback album Instant Holograms on Metal Film, which received support from 2SER, Triple R, 4ZZZ, and more.

“I somehow picked up a copy of this old audio magazine when on a tour of Australia a few years back,” Stereolab founder and guitarist Tim Gaines says. “It’s got a nice cover and it was just laying around the studio when I was writing the demos and every time I finished one I just opened the magazine to a random page and picked a name from it, which I used as a rough title. Some of those titles later got changed but the LP name is straight out of that mag.”

“Capturing the inspiring spark in bygone visions of what the future could be is one of Stereolab‘s greatest strengths, and the brilliant ways they do this on Instant Holograms on Metal Film don’t just live up to their legacy — they push it forward,” praised AllMusic.

“The overwhelming impression is of a band looking forward, seizing opportunities and further boosting their reputation,” wrote musicOMH.

“The band’s indefinite hiatus has not been in vain, as they have clearly been spending this time carefully piecing together what feels like their strongest album in years,” wrote The Quietus.

On the live circuit, Stereolab have recently played well-received shows in London (Royal Festival Hall), NYC (Brooklyn Steel), Chicago (Metro x 2), Los Angeles (Bellwether), and more.

Stereolab have a strong relationship with Australia, with Aussie musician Mary Hansen acting as co-lead vocalist in the band between 1992 and 2002. Hansen sadly passed away in 2002 at the age of 36.

They previously played iconic local festivals Laneway and Golden Plains.
