Ahead of the release of Red Sunset, her first studio project in fifteen years, Aotearoa music icon Bic Runga has today shared a new single, the ethereal “Ghost in Your Bed”.
Following on from the release of the album’s title track late last year, “Ghost in Your Bed” offers further perspective on the dreamy indie landscapes she takes brilliant strides through on this record.
Created between Paris and Auckland, the track serves as another gorgeous example of Runga’s creative partnership with Kody Nielson, while the legendary Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone at Sterling Sound handled mastering of the final product – a track that burns with power and intimacy in equal measure.
“‘Ghost in Your Bed’ was another song that I’d had unfinished for more than ten years,” Runga said of the single. “It’s a spooky song of feeling very troubled, especially on a sleepless night, when you feel haunted by something, ‘lying there like the ghost in your bed’ and realising the thing haunting you is of your own making.”
The song’s release is the perfect final piece of the puzzle to set up for the release of Red Sunset on Friday, February 13th. The album is Runga’s first collection of all-original material since 2011’s Belle, and also features previous singles “It’s Like Summertime”, a song in which Runga recalled her carefree past while looking towards a hopeful future, and “Paris in the Rain”, a cinematic anthem inspired by the titular French city.
Fans won’t be waiting long to see her return to stages across Australia and Aotearoa, with her album tour set to kick off in March in Hawke’s Bay, continuing through Aotearoa into April, where she will then make the trip to Australia for some unmissable live performances.

At the 2023 Rolling Stone Aotearoa Awards, Runga was presented with the prestigious Rolling Stone Icon Award. The Icon Award recognises an artist for achievements over the course of their career, and 2023 was the first time it was awarded at the Rolling Stone Aotearoa Awards. She also stole the show on the night with an incredible live performance.
The following year, Runga was part of a dreamy Kiwi pairing in our Musicians on Musicians series, sitting down with pop star BENEE for a touching conversation about music and life. Read their full Musicians on Musicians conversation here.
