Following Donald Trump‘s address to the nation Wednesday night — during which he spent nearly 20 minutes defending his handling of inflation and tariffs, while boasting about his alleged triumphs in 2025 — Jimmy Kimmel slammed the president’s “surprise primetime episode of The Worst Wing.”
“Yesterday, the president announced he’d be giving an impromptu liar side chat tonight in the middle of the season finales of Survivor and The Floor he interrupted,” continued the host during his Jimmy Kimmel Live! monologue. “It’s weird to think that had a couple of states just gone the other way, he’d be hosting one of those shows. Trump shouldn’t be preempting the floor. He should be mopping it.”
Kimmel then read Trump’s Truth Social post from the day before in which the president wrote, “My Fellow Americans: I will be giving an ADDRESS TO THE NATION tomorrow night, LIVE FROM THE WHITE HOUSE… I look forward to ‘seeing’ you then. It has been a great year for our Country, and THE BEST IS YET TO COME!” After reading the president’s post, Kimmel quipped, “I agree the Epstein files are due on Friday.”
The president’s year-end speech on Wednesday arrived amid his declining approval rating as many Americans across the country worry about inflation and the cost of living despite Trump’s campaign promises to lower prices and “make America affordable again.” As his first term comes to an end, just 36 percent of Americans approve of the president’s handling of the economy, according to a new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll.
Trump is also embroiled in controversy over his alleged ties to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The president has denied any wrongdoing in relation to or prior knowledge of Epstein’s sex crimes. In November, Trump signed a bill to force the the Department of Justice to release its case files on the Epstein — capitulating to pressure from within his own party after spending months trying to kill the measure.
The president’s speech did not address his administration’s escalating threats against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
