Australia’s own Sam Worthington is joining director and fellow cast member Brendan Cowell in Sydney for the Australian premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash, as confirmed today by 20th Century Studios and Lightstorm Entertainment.
Worthington is of course, Avatar’s leading man and figurehead of Pandora’s fight back against the RDA: Jake Sully. Cowell joined the franchise more recently, but his character — the Tulkun hunter Mick Scoresby — is set to return, minus an arm, in Avatar: Fire and Ash. The two local leads, plus the iconic director himself, will be visiting the red carpet outside IMAX Sydney on Monday, December 15.
Disney released the first trailer for the third Avatar film earlier this year. It’s the follow-up to the hugely successful Avatar: The Way of Water.
Just like “The Way of Water” introduced the aquatic Metkayina clan of Pandora, “Fire and Ash” will debut a new group called the Mangkwan clan, AKA the Ash People.
“You’ll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before,” Cameron said at the 2024 D23 Expo. “It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before,” Cameron said during the presentation. “We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”
The trailer shows Jake Sully’s family and the Metkayina joining forces to fight against Varang and her fiery forces, who have allied with Quaritch (Lang). It appears that Varang has the ability to control fire, and her blazes burn down parts of Pandora’s forest. “Your goddess has no dominion here,” she ominously says at the end of the trailer.
Along with Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, the returning cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco and Dileep Rao. Oona Chaplin plays the leader of the Ash People, Varang. David Thewlis and Michelle Yeoh have also joined the cast.

“The Way of Water” and “Fire and Ash” were originally conceived as one film, but Cameron split them into separate films once writing began.
