Amazon’s God of War TV adaptation has found its first director, as reported by Deadline. The series, currently in pre-production, will have its first two episodes directed by Frederick E.O Toye.

It’s a fitting pick for a series that has fantasy epic potential, and Variety has confirmed Amazon has already ordered a second season of the series. Adapting 2018’s God of War (and hopefully 2022’s God of War Ragnarok), the series’ official logline states, “God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

The God of War video games follow Kratos, the son of Zeus, who, over the course of several games, goes from warrior demigod to full-blown Greek God of War, after murdering his way through his pantheon of relatives as vengeance for their callous treatment of mortals.

The series adapts the second era of the franchise, Kratos is older and wiser, and now a solo parent to a young son, far away from Greece, instead set in the Nine Realms of Norse mythology. Atreus has lived a quiet life so far, but over the course of God of War and God of War Ragnarok, Kratos earns the attention and ire of Odin, Thor and the rest of the Norse pantheon.

Toye is a highly accomplished director in the TV medium, having won an Emmy for Best Directing for the first season of FX’s Shōgun, as well as past credits on Westworld, The Boys, The Walking Dead, The Terminal List and Amazon’s hit adaptation of Fallout — which will see a second season release later this month.

Amazon’s God of War was originally greenlit in 2022, but the original showrunner Rafe Judkins exited in 2024 — he was replaced by Ronald D. Moore of Outlander, Star Trek and For All Mankind not long after. Additional executive producers on the series include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon.

Co-executive producers include Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, Ben McGinnis, and Jeff Ketcham. The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
