Scarlett Johansson has reiterated her support of veteran filmmaker Woody Allen — who was disavowed by the entertainment industry after he was accused of sexual abuse by his stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow, as reported by Variety.
Johansson is one of the few industry names who continues to publicly support Allen after the claims emerged, first in 1992 and then again in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Allen has consistently denied the claims, which have also been investigated and dismissed by New York authorities.
In 2019, Johansson told The Hollywood Reporter: “I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work him anytime.” She has previously starred in three of his films, Match Point, Scoop and Vicky Christina Barcelona.
In a new interview with The Daily Telegraph, Johansson said it was “hard to know” whether she had experienced any fallout in both her professional or personal life for her ongoing public support of Allen. “You never know what the domino effect is, exactly. But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that it’s important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in.”
“At the same time, I think it’s also important to know when it’s not your turn. I don’t mean that you should silence yourself. I mean sometimes it’s just not your time. And that’s something I’ve understood more as I’ve matured.”
During the interview, the star also reaffirmed her public objection of a ChatGPT-generated voice that she claims sounds “eerily similar” to her own. She also touched on her decision to sue Disney in 2021 for pushing Black Widow direct to streaming, before calling on other actors to speak out against similar issues.
“I mean, it would be great to have more support from the community and my peers — vocally, publicly — on certain issues that affect the entire industry,” she said, then adding, “It’s always helpful to have more voices, you guys!”
