On the Record with Worm Girlz

The Brisbane alternative rock band follow the release of their self-titled debut album by taking part in our On the Record series

Since their 2023 debut single ‘Dirt’, Brisbane/Meanjin alternative rock quintet Worm Girlz have wriggled their way into the hearts of fans across the country.

Following national tours with Crywank and WAAX, the band released their anticipated self-titled debut album last month, which navigates weighty themes of body dysmorphia and calling out predatory behaviour, all while being unapologetically authentic.

Worm Girlz tackle each topic with brutal honesty — a trait that has seen their tight-knit community grow significantly with each release. Recorded entirely with longtime collaborator and trusted producer Lucas Montgomery, the album is as introspective as it is celebratory, combining quick wit and wry humour with pent-up ferocity.

To celebrate the milestone, Worm Girlz have taken their live show across the East Coast, with headline shows in Melbourne and Brisbane. They’ve got one show left at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory on Friday, December 5th — see here for details.

As part of our On the Record series, in which artists take us through some of their favourite records, Worm Girlz’ Bella Wood-de-Melo, Angie Gale, and Jade Montgomery headed over to Sonic Sherpa in Brisbane.

Check out their picks, featuring some Aussie favourites, below.

Worm Girlz’s self-titled debut album is out now.

On the Record with Worm Girlz

Emily Wurramara – NARA

We all know that this is a stunning record from Emily Wurramara. It’s so lush, Emily’s voice shines so bright on this album. I just think it’s the perfect album for listening every day, any day, any mood. —Jade

Suzi – Patchwork

Suzi’s debut album Patchwork is one of my all-time favourite albums at the moment. I love Suzi so much, I love this album so much. I think my favourite song off it would have to be “One Way Ticket”, it breaks my heart every time.

And a fun fact about this album is if you have four of them, you can put them all together and make a little Suzi pie. —Angie

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers – Pretty Good for a Girl Band

This is actually an EP by the local legends… I absolutely love this EP. It rocks. My favourite song is “Up to Summit”, I just think that it is so, so fun, and it’s really iconic. Every time I think of Teen Jesus, I think of this EP. —Bella
