ER, the medical drama that brought Noah Wyle together with writer R. Scott Gemmill and executive producer John Wells, earned 23 Emmy Awards over the course of its 15-season run. Earlier this year, the trio returned with The Pitt, another hospital-based drama that adopts an unconventional, hour-by-hour approach to the traditional format. And on Sunday night, the show began to build its own Emmys collection, including a win for Outstanding Drama Series.
After taking the stage, Gemmill used his brief acceptance speech to thank real-life healthcare workers for inspiring the show. “I want to dedicate this on behalf of everyone to all the healthcare workers, frontline first-responders,” said Gemmill. “Respect them. Protect them. Trust them.”
The Pitt faced off with a competitive set of nominated series, including Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, Severance, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus.

Just earlier in the evening, Noah Wyle won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Dr. Robby, and Katherine LaNasa won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Nurse Dana Evans.

The HBO Max series scored additional nominations in Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for Amanda Marsalis and John Wells, and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for R. Scott Gemmill and Joe Sachs.
Each episode of the series centres on a specific hour in the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center emergency room. The Pitt returns for another shift in January, picking up during the July 4 weekend, around 10 months after the events of Season One conclude.
“That’s what the audience comes for: to be surprised, and challenged,” Gemmill told Rolling Stone earlier this year. “The compression in one day is a conceit, but I think it worked. What was really amazing is how quickly the cast and crew adapted to it. The first day was a little crazy… By the end of the first episode, we were just humming along like we’ve been doing it for 10 years. It was really, really impressive how quickly everyone fell into that rhythm.”
