Adam Hattaway and the Haunters are back sooner than you’d expect.
“Ted Danson” is the hypnotic rock ’n’ roll lead single from their upcoming album, Hot Variety, their seventh to date.
For the hardworking Christchurch band, the project has been years in the making.
“We’ve been working on something in the background for the past three years,” Hattaway shares. “Many trips to our favourite studio and many collaborations with some of our favourite creatives in Ōtautahi.”
The single comes with a buzzy stop-motion video by Maya Templer and Jack O’Connell, featuring quirky cutouts of Bob Dylan, Richard Nixon and, of course, Ted Danson.
Hot Variety is set for release on September 5th across all streaming platforms, alongside a limited edition run of 100 vinyl copies through Leather Jacket Records.
Adam Hattaway & The Haunters recently earned a well-deserved spot on Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s 80 Best New Zealand Albums of the 2020s So Far list with their latest release, High Horse — a testament to the band’s ever-evolving sound and growing influence.

“It’s a wonderful thing when an artist lands on a sound and style that’s tailor-made for them. On his sixth full-length album in six years, Adam Hattaway takes a significant turn towards a more stripped-down approach than his earlier rock ‘n’ roll releases,” our editorial team wrote.
“Produced by fellow New Zealand singer-songwriter Marlon Williams, Hattaway leans into slower tempos and grittier rhythms, pushing his voice further than ever before. Hattaway may well return to rockier territory in the future, but High Horse is so good that he’d be a fool to leave this sparser style behind.”
The Haunters have two upcoming shows: at Lyttelton Arts Festival on July 4th, and in Wellington at Rogue & Vagabond on July 10th.
